Limbaugh, 69, said on Monday that he had been diagnosed with the disease on advanced radio. He said the diagnosis was confirmed on January 20.
“I wish I didn’t have to tell you, and I thought of not telling anyone, I thought of trying to do it without anyone knowing because I don’t like to do things about me, ”said Limbaugh. But “there will be days when I can’t be here because I’m going to be on treatment or I’m reacting to the treatment.”
Limbaugh has organized The Rush Limbaugh Show in national syndication for 31 years. He is an icon of the Republican Party and a close ally of President Trump.
The president recently called Limbaugh “a major star who never wavered despite the Fake News Hits he had to endure. His voice is much bigger than theirs! “
Limbaugh said at the end of Monday’s program that he planned not to be on Tuesday and to return on Thursday.
“I intend to come here every day that I can and to do this program as normally and as efficiently as I do it every day because it is the source of my greatest satisfaction,” said Limbaugh.
Limbaugh’s radio contract was scheduled to expire later this year. He renewed his agreement in early January with the syndication company Premiere Radio Networks.
“Rush is both a colleague and a dear friend, and I know he will handle the situation with courage and grace,” said Rich Bressler, president of Premiere’s parent company, iHeartMedia, in a statement. “I know that millions of people across the country join me and iHeart in wishing him a full recovery. “
Its program “continues to be the most listened to national radio program in America,” said Premiere when it was renewed.
Limbaugh fans expressed shock at the diagnosis on Monday afternoon.
“Say a prayer today to my colleague Rush @limbaugh who has just announced that he has lung cancer and is going to be on treatment,” Lars Larson tweeted. “America needs its voice! “
Republican MP Mark Meadows tweeted Psalm 46: 1 for Limbaugh. “I send him prayers, his family and his entertainment staff for the next few days,” he wrote.
